Osteoarthritis

- Moderately severe in which many joints are affected with constitutional disturbances and associated anaemia. The ESR is high and Rheumatoid Factor is positive
- Severe stage in which there is considerable muscular atrophy with weight loss, anaemia and presence deformities of joints with subcutaneous nodules. E.S.R is high, Rheumatoid Factor is strongly positive.
More recently rheumatoid arthritis has been regarded as a disease of auto immunisation due to the development of hypersensitivity to some endogenous proteins.
Antibodies are formed to the patient’s own tissues and can be detected in the globulin fraction of the blood. This antibody macroglobulin I, II, III, IV & V are collectively known as Rheumatoid Factor
